The most disappointing part of the Olympics was the closing ceremonies after Neil Young was done.

What a load of crap that show was.

^ Agreed. It was kind of shocking that VANOC, which generally did a good job all around on the Olympic programming, dropped the ball that badly for the closing ceremonies.

Bublé and Young were good, but man, Nickelback and Avril Lavigne?!?

I actually liked the irreverent "Canada: The Musical" portion of the evening. Inflated beavers, mini-skirted Mounties, dancing Voyageurs and a musical finale done on top of a huge Mountie hat? How can you not like that? And the Russian presentation was pretty good (aside from the pseudo-Avatar graphics).

But when Nickelback started playing, things went downhill very quickly and bottomed out by the time Simple Plan came on stage. That final segment almost made me embarrased to be Canadian.

The "musical" was cute, but may I propose a moratorium on any Joe Canadian-inspired rants at public events for at least the next decade? A ten-year old beer commercial is NOT a culturally defining touchstone for a generation. The slam poet at the opening ceremonies was quite enough - Shatner and O'Hara were overkill.

The Russians did a great job, in a very serious, humorless sort of way that reminded me of Vladimir Putin.

Yup.

You can probably add Catherine O'Hara, Hedley, Avril and K-OS (whom I normally like) to that list as well.

I also found the monologues by Bill Shatner and MJ Fox to be pretty cheesy and scripted. Sure they were born in Canada, but really, these guys live and reside in the US. I would love to see MJ Fox actually order back bacon with his breakfast.

Agreed. I've blocked most of those rants out of my memory with the exception of Michael J. Fox's part - which was notable because he was clearly working hard to keep going and because he so rarely appears in public these days.

Bingo. It is embarrassing that we had to import Americans to fill these roles.

The same could be said about Mr. Young who has been American for a long time. I think the idea was to bring a few widely known celebrities "out of the closet" with their admission to be Canadian on the world stage (we knew that, but the rest of the world probably didn't).

Yes it is sad that many Canadians have to be imported home for these events . Neil has had a hard time with Canada for years .
These impulsive half breeds have got spoiled by this emote and must be kept down by a strong hand.Until they are swamped by the influx of settlers . Sir John A McDonald
