As a small consolation, the Bisons got some help from the Puddy-tats. I figured that Regina would give a decent battle since they looked good when they played Sask. Regina forced the overtime with a last-minute goal. Crazy night! Calgary now pulls within a point of Manitoba in the race for 2nd place.

After last weekend I suppose many thought that the Tweety-Birds would mail-in the rest of the year. That's what it looked like as they were outshot 20-3 in the 1st period of this game. However, it was still tied at 0-0. However, Sask opened a 3-0 lead. However, UBC rallied, scoring on 2 of their 4 3rd period shots and amazingly made a game of it. Still, a 3-2 win for Sask puts them within a point of Manitoba. I think the Bisons and Calgary would be happy to see UBC even steal a point from Sask on the weekend.

OUT EAST:

Since we are getting into the home stretch I thought I would update some of the feature games from the OUA and AUS.

This was such a key victory for the Bisons tonight. After a disappointing loss on Friday night they were able to re-focus on the task at hand and beat the Evil Monkeys. In four games against the Primates they have two regulation wins, one game they could have won, and one more they should have won.

Importantly, the weekend split leaves the Bisons all alone in 2nd place.

I had to miss the 1st period because my son's team had a game. However, since this one was broadcast by 101.5 UMFM we were able to listen on radio en route to the Max Bell. Apparently, the Bisons came out flying and jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Kyle Howarth (his 6th) and Calin Wild (also his 6th). Chad Klassen (his 13th) paced an Alberta comeback with a PP goal. Alberta outshot the Bisons 13-7, although shots were 6-6 at one time.

The 2nd period, while well-played, was not as fast paced as Friday night's game. I had the impression that the back-to-back nights of intense hockey were taking their toll on the players. The only goal of the period was a short-hander by Alberta. Manitoba started strong on that penalty but the last minute was all-Alberta. They has two good scoring chanes before Klassen's 2nd of the night made it 2-2. The goal seemed to motivate the Evil Monkeys. They had a clear upper-hand in the period, with a 15-7 shots advantage. However, the last 5 minutes or so saw the Bisons get back into the swing of the game. By forcing the play, they ended the period with 36 seconds of an overflow PP.

The 3rd period saw Ian Duval score on the PP (his 4th) in only 26 seconds. However, Klassen completed his hat-trick 3 minutes later on an Alberta PP to level the teams once again. The teams had to suck it up as they were clearly worn down. Then mid-way through the period d-man Dave Brown notched only his 2nd of the season to give the Herd a lead they would never relinquish.

The Bisons had the exact same line-up as on Friday night. The Simians had two changes. Travis Yonkman got the start in goal. (They hav rotated goaltenders all season.) And Michael MacAngus replaced Jean-Pierre Szaszkiewicz on the Metcalfe-Zalasky line.

The Puddy-Tats are not going to go down without a fight. They got this much-needed home ice sweep to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. Regina held a 3-0 lead after 2 periods. Then it was a traditional hang-on-for-dear-life ending. Calgary outshot Regina 15-2 in the 3rd period as they closed to within 3-2. However, an empty-netter salted it away for Regina. Brant Hilton must have done a great job in the Cougar goal.

Regina is now 8 points behind Calgary, but with 4 games in hand. The Bisons visit Regina next weekend whilst Calgary has a bye.

UBC hung in there for a while but it seems like they have folded the proverbial tent. They looked to be a solid hockey club when they came here to play the Bisons and gained a split. However, when they needed a home-ice sweep over Lethbridge and lost game 1 they have gone to crap ever since. I thought they might come up with one last strong performance at home and steal a point or two from the Banjodogs, but not even close.

WEEKEND UPDATE

I found some new links as the weekend wraps up:

Alberta @ Manitoba:
|> [CIS STORY - FRIDAY] ~ [CIS STORY - SATURDAY]
|> [FREE PRESS: Last hometown hurrah for Bears' Metcalfe]

Since this series was a feature match-up in the CIS the game story was posted at the CIS site for both games. Ashley Prest had a Free Press story on Headingley boy Tyler Metcalfe, who went to the Evil Monkeys after 5 years in the WHL.

As for the Evil Monkeys, I found some pictures:
Image Image Image
The coach announced a bag skate for Monday. One grabbed all the bananas he could and went home. Another just went crazy.
Image But this new recruit showed lots of desire and could be in the line-up next game.

Saskatchewan @ UBC:

The Tweety-Birds are toast but still put out a good game story, shown here with 3 different links.

Calgary @ Regina:

This series never generated much for stories but the bare-bones U or R story is now linked at the U of C.

SERIES PREVIEW: BISONS VISIT COUGARS

Image Image

MANITOBA BISONS
(13-7-2, 28 points, 2nd place, #3 in OHT34)
REGINA COUGARS
(8-11-1, 17 points, 6th place, #18 in OHT34)

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH @ 7:00 CST
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6TH @ 7:00 CST
AT REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN

Both teams are coming off solid weekends, the Bisons splitting with the Evil Monkeys and the Puddy-Tats sweeping Calgary. Regina is in a desperate position. However, the good news is that if they win all 8 of their remaining games they would get a playoff berth. The bad news is that would involve doubling their season total.

Regina has had a very mediocre season. They have looked at times like they would go into a tailspin. They have had issues scoring (last in the league with only 50) and finding a #1 goaltender. Both Adam Ward and Brant Hilton have had their moments, and both have strong histories in the league.

The Bisons need a strong weekend to generate some space ahead of Sask and Calgary (both idle) in the race for 2nd place. After this weekend they have a bye, then travel to Saskatoon, then are at home against Regina to wrap up the regular season.

By the looks of the summary the Bisons were as flat as the road to Regina. No goals, few shots, few penalties, very little activity. Early on Kyle Howarth was foiled on a penalty shot by Cougar goalie Brant Hilton (former WS Blue). However, the Bisons only had a grand total of 11 SOG through 2 periods before tallying 13 in the 3rd when it was all but over. The Bisons will have to crank up the intensity to salvage a much needed split.

Here's a quirk: Since the Bisons swept the Puddy-tats in mid-November, the Bisons have split 5 straight series. If the Bisons win on Saturday that would make 6 straight splits, one against each other team in the league.

This was hard to believe, but earlier this year the Evil Monkeys beat the Horny Ones 8-5. The question now is whether the Horny Ones can regroup on the road. Alberta bombarded Lethbridge with 52 shots. However, it was 6-5 for Lethbridge after 2 periods. Alberta only took the late with just over a minute to play then padded the scoreline with an empty-netter.

They also announced that Lethbridge's Adam Chorneyko is January's Canada West Husky-WHL Grad of the Month. [L.U. LINK] ~ [C.W. LINK]

BISONS SPLIT YET AGAIN

BISONS EXTEND SPLIT STREAK TO 6

Image Image
MANITOBA BISONS 3

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [SCORER'S SHEET]
|> GAME STORY NOT YET POSTED

The Bisons, predictably, came up with yet another split. That means the last 6 series, one against each C.W. rival, have been split.

It looks like Rick Wood must have been injured on Friday because the Bisons dressed 7 d-men for the game. Also, both Regina goals were scored 5-on-3. I am waiting to find out just what happened. Nine of the last 10 penalties were against the Bisons. Considering the Bisons have by far the lowest PIMs in the league, that seems most unusual.

Bison scorers were Tyler Dittmer (7th), Ian Duval (5th), and Blair Mcaulay (7th).

The Bisons have a bye week next whilst Regina visits Lethbridge. Regina is now 6 points behind 4th place Calgary with 2 games in hand. The Bisons are still in 2nd, 3 points ahead of Sask and 5 points up on Calgary.

The Horny Ones gained a much needed split against the Evil Monkeys. Alberta cannot be happy with these high scores. The shots were only 35-31 so maybe goaltending was an issue.

The Bisons will be happy to see the Dinos win the game, but not with the fact that 3 points were awarded. Sask bombarded Calgary with 21 shots in the 1st period, yet escaped with only a 1-0 lead. Thereafter the game was up for grabs, and the Dinos grabbed it. Sask now trails the Bisons by 2 points and Calgary trails by 3. Sask entered the weekend at #9 in the OHT34 rankings whilst Calgary was #11. That could switch after Saturday.

This result finishes things for the Puddy-Tats. They rallied after Christmas but were in too big of a hole. Lethbridge stays within 2 points of Calgary with both sides down to 3 games remaining. Lethbridge has climbed to #15 in the OHT34 and could keep rising. Regina was #18 but is now in grave danger of falling.

The Evil Monkeys cannot be happy about their play down the stretch. They have now lost 3 of their last 4 games. BTW, UNB also lost tonight (their first loss of the year). Maybe it is hard to play once 1st place has been wrapped up. Alberta is #2 in the OHT34 whilst UBC is #24. That shows the severity of this upset.

CALGARY DINOSAURS 1

(in overtime)
|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [SCORER'S SHEET]
|> [U OF S STORY] ~ [C.W. STORY]

This series has to anger the Bisons. Each of these teams gets 3 points for splitting the series. The result pulls Sask even with the Bisons at 30 points (with 4 games remaining), whilst Calgary sits at 28 points (with 2 games remaining). The teams in the CW have been extremely competitive with one another in the 2nd half of the season. Sask was at #9 in the OHT34 and Calgary was at #11.

Calgary scored the lone goal of the 1st period and held that narrow lead to the 3rd period. Then the teams played a defence-oriented 3rd period where Sask outshot Calgary 6-2. (Could that be a misprint?) Calgary wraps up the season at home against UBC. Sask hosts Manitoba then travels to Lethbridge.

Image Image
REGINA COUGARS 3
LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 4

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [SCORER'S SHEET]

Lethbridge had a 4-1 lead and Regina stormed back to make it close. The loss officially eliminates Regina from the playoffs, although Friday's loss got the fat lady warming up her vocal chords. The Horny Ones now sit only one point behind Calgary, each with 2 games left. Since losing to 1-0 to Manitoba to start the 2nd half, Lethbridge has gone 8-1. In the national rankings, Lethbridge entered at #15 and Regina was #18 in the OHT34. I think Regina will tumble a bit.

UBC THUNDERBIRDS 1
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 7

I guess the Evil Monkeys didn't take too kindly to a loss on Friday night and took it out with a vengeance in the rematch. I listened to some on the internet and UBC did not mount much of a threat. Still, 2 points in Edmontown is a credible weekend for anybody. The question now is whether UBC can be Calgary's spoiler next weekend when they wrap up their season. Alberta was (and will remain) at #2 in the OHT34 and UBC's #24 ranking won't change much. They now have wins over Alberta, Manitoba, Calgary, and McGill, all A level teams.
