Postby Old Chum on Wed Feb 03, 2010 9:43 pm

In the up coming Olympics and what do you think will mean the most to you. Hockey and Speed skating for me .

Nothing.

The Olympics have left a bad taste in my mouth ever since the IOC started to crack down on every company using the words "olympic" and "olympia" or companies that are unable to cheer on Olympic athletes in their ads without being an "official sponsor".

The Olympics is more about pumping a billion dollar machine instead of being a showcase for amateur athletes.

I'll probably watch a bit of random stuff here and there while channel-surfing, but that's about it. I figure that since I normally wouldn't cross the street to watch biathlon or luge, there's no particular reason to get excited about it during the Olympics.

As Sputnik alluded, the Olympics' charm has been seriously eroded by the uber-corporate nature of the event. It's a big deal if you're an athlete, IOC member, or executive with one of the sponsors - otherwise, meh.

That's the prevailing sentiment in our house. Coupled with the limitations on free speech that would make Chairman Mao blush, it seems that sports is not much of a priority.

That said, allow me to hypocritize by saying "women's speed skating and women's curling."

I guess sputnik "doesn't believe!"

It makes me sick that people are being threatened with being arrested if they even dare criticize the olympics in Vancouver, a friend of mine at UBC got a notice the other day that anyone who has any anti-olympics/anti-sponsorship signs or anything of the sort, they will be promptly evicted from the university residence

I'm hoping for some good movies on AMC.

The half pipe competition that was just on was pretty good.

Lots of disappointment as most boarders fell - but Shaun White had a great ride for the last time down.

I have been keeping the channel on CTV for background noise. Mostly pay attention to alpine skiing and ski jumping. Getting intrigued by snowboarding. Also like figure skating. Hockey is boring.
