But that being said, How about we actually start trying to live within our means instead of trying to keep up with "the Jones".

I wasn't talking about a covered stadium myself - I have long questioned the supposed need for a dome given that unlike Regina, we already have a major indoor sports and entertainment venue. A dome would be nice, but it seems unlikely given the major additional cost.

Personally, I think the best type of stadium for us would be the one proposed by CanadInns - it was basically an oval with a large roof covering the seating areas, with a hole over the field itself (think along the lines of Texas Stadium). I think a new stadium should offer some tangible improvement over the existing one - e.g., more seating, more amenities that will help sustain the Bombers (club seats, private boxes, restaurants), training and administrative facilities.

Newsflash: It's really cold in Winnipeg during the winter.

Reality: A climate controlled domed stadium makes sense for Winnipeg.

If it has to be built outside of the city limits to still honour the True North agreement, then so be it. I'm sure West St. Paul would love to be the home of the Bombers.

Fair enough, but the question is, does West St. Paul (or any other municipality besides Winnipeg) have anything to contribute to a new stadium? Besides land grants and maybe tax holidays, methinks not.

As appealing as it is, the hard part of a domed stadium is making a business case for one. A stadium here would be relying on one major tenant at 10, maybe 11 or 12 games a year, and a few major concerts/shows. On the face of it, that seems like a tough proposition.

Then again, if our neighbours in Grand Forks and Fargo (and maybe now Regina) can make it work, why is it completely impossible here? Hmm.

I think the business case could be made for attracting more trade shows and conventions aside from football games.

There are also events such as monster truck rallies.

A domed stadium would provide more winter entertainment opportunities.

Most domes I have been in have not been very good very noisy, and you sit a fair ways back from the field . The Fargo dome remember was privately funded was it not Ralph Engelstad or some one like that.

Looks like the new covered stadium in Regina would cost anywhere between $386 and $430 Million.
And it would need 31 events to be profitable.

I don't think Winnipeg has one of those "sugar daddies".

Ralph Englestad paid for the arena in Grand Forks, which is of a size and scale similar to that of the MTS Centre - quite amazing when you consider how small Grand Forks is relative to Winnipeg.

The Alerus Center, which is the domed stadium in Grand Forks, was paid for at least in part by a dedicated sales tax. There were no Ralph Engelstad-style sugar daddies involved in that one, unless you count the scores of Winnipeggers who paid the tax on their jaunts to Columbia Mall and Super Target.

I wonder how Grand Forks managed to build such a dome when it already had an amazing new arena? Is there something unique about Grand Forks that means it couldn't be duplicated here :?:

In addition to that plan, there is also a proposal from the Saskatchewan First Nations for a Douglas Cardinal-designed stadium and casino complex (and which may or may not be backed by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, depending on who you listen to) and is estimated to cost $1.2 billion.
