Not as far as I know, but they'll sell you a new one.

If the contractor damages the box, then the city will replace it (just like they say with carts). However, if you run it over with your car, then you're SOL and have to replace it yourself. I remember hearing from someone that they can usually tell by the damage. For example, if it cracks down the joint it would be damage from the contractor due to dropping it down in cold vs a crack mid-way on a side.

Good on the councilors for their decision.
But after some residents complained about the limited capacity of the 240-litre carts, the city's water and waste department came forward with a plan to offer a second cart — or larger carts — in exchange for an annual fee.

This morning, council's public works committee voted 2-1 against that plan, as Couns. Harry Lazarenko (Mynarski) and Dan Vandal (St. Boniface) said it will promote the generation of more garbage.

Agreed.

When you really think about it, there is very little waste that should need to be thrown out if recycling and composting are practiced.

240L should be sufficient for 99.99% of families.

In other related news it appears as though the blue boxes are also being replaced with 240L carts by September.

WINNIPEG - Blue boxes across Winnipeg will be replaced by 240-litre carts this September, as council's public works committee has chosen a new recycling contractor.

I think it's pretty funny that people are willing to go on the news complaining that the carts are too small, as they cram bags and bags full of recyclables into the garbage.

I saw a report quoting a women with two carts in her driveway explain that she needed them with near half a dozen kids and half a dozen adults living in the household. Maybe that's so.

It would be neat if the city had "garbage counselors" who would go visit someone's house right before garbage day, and go through the trash with the homeowner. They would separate out yard waste, composting and recycling for the homeowner to show them what didn't need to go into the garbage.

Of course, the people who would really need someone to do this for them wouldn't sign up.

People will react in much the way contractors did when faced with waste dumping restrictions - find the nearest autobin.
And while we're on this topic, more people are dumping unbagged waste into the autobins. This is the unintended consequence of charging for plastic at the supermarket. People just empty garbage directly in. Very gross.

I would say that if one wants a second bin that they have to have a "garbage assessment" done on the day prior to garbage... err... recycling day to ensure they actually NEED another bin.
