Yes I hope he runs too as it is time for this city not to be run from removed. To many of Katz,s deals are done in this manner .

Katz will get elected again because the simple folk like his simple message. Simple Winnipeg.

No, he will win because his competitors will split the vote.

I think this is likely as well. Best chance of ousting Katz will be if he goes up against only one other credible candidate.

The vote will split even more if this happens.

Interesting.
Watching CBC Manitoba news talking about potholes, and they introduced Wyatt as "considering running for mayor".

By his latest media rants I'm not surprised.
With the clock ticking, I'm just surprised with all the talk and the lack of action (ie. actually stepping up).

No surprise that the city is holding the line on property taxes. I wonder with elections whether any big decisions will actually get made.

You also have to question the fact that they're balancing their budget on expected money that they're going to get from Manitoba Hydro. Isn't that like how they balanced the previous budget based on expected revenue from sponsorship? (which they've still yet to see a single cent...)

I honestly can't believe that shammy got voted in with this logic:
"This is a budget. This is all projection," Katz said of the Hydro money. "It's no different than if we went way over on our snow-clearing budget: We'd have to find the money, which is exactly what we would do in any case."

A Probe/Free Press poll puts Katz out in front, with the support of 51% of those polled:

Mayor Sam Katz is poised to win his third term in office this fall, but Judy Wasylycia-Leis would mount a respectable challenge, a new Probe Research/Free Press poll suggests.

In a hypothetical race between Winnipeg's current mayor and four possible challengers, a slim majority of Winnipeg voters -- 51 per cent -- would re-elect Katz, according to a March survey of 603 randomly selected adults in this city.

The Probe/Free Press poll asked survey respondents to choose between Katz, Winnipeg North MP Wasylycia-Leis, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce president Dave Angus and city councillors Russ Wyatt (Transcona) and Lillian Thomas (Elmwood-East Kildonan).

The numbers stack up like this:

Katz - 51%
Wasylycia-Leis - 36%
Wyatt - 7%
Angus - 5%
Thomas - 2%

As things stand, it looks like only Judy W-L is in a position to give Katz a run for his money. Wyatt and Angus would have to declare pretty much now and work their tails off to even stand a chance.

Interestingly, neither W-L, Wyatt nor Angus have declared their intention to run. Doing that could give their numbers a bit of a boost.

Frankly, I wish we had a better alternative to Katz and Judy W-L. Hey, what's Peter Kaufmann up to these days?

Considering the dismal turnout for civic elections, I wonder how many of those people would actually come out to vote. Katz may be the professed favourite, but would the "51%" bother getting out and voting for him?

A candidate with a strong GOTV machine (something Katz doesn't have) would stand a good chance of unseating him.
