I think $400 Million is a good number for a stadium these days.

If it was built for the Bombers and the Universities, then it's money well spent.

Winnipeg get a lot more Grey Cups.

^ Winnipeg's would probably come in at a lot less than $400 million. You could build a top-flight outdoor stadium for the Bombers at half that cost.

For what it's worth, both the Ledohowski/CanadInns and the Asper/Creswin stadium proposals called for largely privately-funded developments - much like the MTS Centre.

I don't think anyone has seriously pitched a publicly-funded stadium (although I could think of worse ways to spend a 0.5 or 1 per cent municipal sales tax than on one).

My B.S. meter just went off.........
Why would a Winnipeg covered stadium cost less than half of a stadium in Saskatchewan?
Is labor that much less here than it is in Sask?
Does Steel cost that much less here than in Sask.?
Does cement cost that much less here than in Sask.?
etc. etc.

And that land that the present Winnipeg stadium resides on must be worth a few bucks considering it is smack dab in the middle of one of Winnipegs largest retail areas and so close to the airport besides.

What I want to know is when is someone going to pull the plug on Asper's proposal and move forward so that a new stadium actually gets built?

^ I think that a domed stadium here would probably be in the same cost ballpark as Saskatchewan's - while it is not a project that I would consider too big for Winnipeg, it is complicated by numerous factors which don't exist in Sask.

I think a well-designed, well-appointed outdoor (but still weather protected) stadium would be ideal for us.

Just in case what anyone was wondering what this bad boy is going to look like... here's a rendering from the Shindico website. (Click on the attached JPG for a full-sized view.)

That is the redeveloped CKY building on the left (which will house CJOB/Power 97/Groove FM), and a new building on the right, with a sea of parking in between. (Silver City Polo Park is the purple building in the background.)

I'm really quite surprised that they couldn't have done a better job with this, although I suppose that with The Elms going up nearby, this area is reaching the point of saturation with respect to retailers.

My lurd that's an awful lot of parking! Seriously, are they going to put something with the draw of IKEA there??? Bleh.

And LOL cbot - you really think the Elms is going to go forward? If it does, I bet it will be a shadow of its current self.
